A total solar eclipse will cross parts of western Iceland, including the Reykjanes Peninsula, on Wednesday, 12 August 2026. The event has already led to an emergency preparedness operation and a rush on local accommodation and transport, according to mbl.is.

Authorities on the Southern Peninsula (Suðurnes) have activated an incident command and are planning a wide array of preparedness measures for the day of the eclipse. Police in Suðurnes, local rescue teams, the Suðurnes fire service, Grindavík fire brigade and the Suðurnes health institution will all increase their readiness in anticipation of large numbers of visitors.

Hotels on the Reykjanes Peninsula are already fully booked for the eclipse, and there are no rental cars left for visitors, according to mbl.is. Temporary traffic control measures will be set up on several roads in western Iceland to help manage road user safety and the flow of traffic during the event. Further details about which roads will be affected or the exact times the controls will be in place have not yet been announced.
