Iceland-Greenland joint advice cuts recommended capelin catch for upcoming season

Hafrannsóknastofnun and Greenland’s GINR have updated their shared catch advice, reducing it to just over 105,000 tonnes following a lower-than-expected survey.

Hafrannsóknastofnun, the Icelandic Marine and Freshwater Research Institute, together with the Greenland Institute of Natural Resources (GINR), has issued new advice for the coming capelin fishing season. According to mbl.is, the institutions now recommend a catch of just over 105,000 tonnes.

The updated catch advice is based on acoustic survey results from September, which were considerably below what scientists had anticipated.

The research vessels Tarajoq and Árni Friðriksson conducted the capelin surveys along east Greenland between 28 August and 26 September.

However, unfavourable weather and sea ice made it impossible to cover the full distribution area of the capelin stock. As a result, the true size of the capelin population is likely underestimated this season.

Hafrannsóknastofnun and GINR note that the recommended catch is a substantial reduction compared with what had been expected earlier this year.
