Members of the Flateyri rescue team spoke publicly about their experiences during and after the 2020 avalanches that struck Flateyri, a fishing village in the Westfjords region of Iceland, at a conference held in Harpa concert hall in Reykjavík over the weekend, according to RÚV.

The speakers, as reported by DV, recounted the crucial 38 minutes immediately following the avalanches. They explained how their coordinated efforts during that time saved lives.

Magnús Einar Magnússon, one of the rescue workers, expressed disbelief at the event, saying he ‘almost didn’t believe this could happen’ about the avalanches that fell on Flateyri. This statement was reported by both RÚV and DV, and was translated from Icelandic.
