Brimketill is a distinctive natural pool along the seashore near Staðarberg, west of Grindavík on the Reykjanes Peninsula. At times, the rock basin has the appearance of a traditional Icelandic hot pot, drawing interest for its dramatic oceanfront setting and unique formation.

The pool and surrounding formations are a result of the ceaseless work of the North Atlantic’s waves against ancient basalt cliffs. Continual impact from the ocean pushes air into cracks within the cliffs, creating pressure that, as the tide retreats, pulls rock fragments with it. This natural process gradually shapes the coastline, producing formations like Brimketill and neighbouring pools.

Other forces contribute to the ever-changing landscape. Earthquakes frequently shake the region, causing rockfalls that interact with the tide. Frost, common in Icelandic winters, helps split the rock further, while airborne sand driven by strong winds continues to abrade the exposed basalt. The terrain around Brimketill remains notably rough, with deep fissures and high edges, hinting at its tumultuous origins during volcanic eruptions in the Reykjanes region believed to have occurred around 1210 to 1240.

Folklore and local names

Brimketill is also tied to Icelandic folklore. According to local stories, a night troll named Oddný lived nearby with her family. One night while retrieving a stranded whale at Ræningjasker, she paused to rest and bathe in Brimketill. Failing to return home before sunrise, she was said to have turned to stone, her form standing until the sea finally destroyed it. For this reason, the pool is sometimes called Oddnýjar Pool.

Safety and visiting

The area around Brimketill remains wild and unsupervised. Ocean currents are intense and unpredictable, and strong winds are common, making it hazardous, especially near the water. Entering the ocean here carries serious risk. Those visiting, particularly with children, are advised to exercise extreme caution.
