Proposed increases in charges targeting the tourism industry could have serious consequences for employment and investment in rural Árnessýsla, south Iceland, according to a report from mbl.is.

Jón Bjarnason, the mayor (oddviti) of Hrunamannahreppur, and Bryndís Björnsdóttir, CEO (framkvæmdastjóri) of Laugarás Lagoon, voiced their concerns during the programme ‘Spursmál’. They criticised the plans, warning of their likely impact on local businesses.

Both said that the proposed increased charges on the tourism industry could lead to layoffs. They also warned that the measures might reduce investment and weaken business activity in rural parts of Árnessýsla. Details of the proposed charges, including who is behind them or when they might take effect, have not yet been specified.
