Hellulaug is a natural hot spring found along the coastline near Vatnsfjörður in Iceland’s Westfjords. This geothermal pool provides visitors with warm waters and expansive views of both the Atlantic Ocean and the surrounding fjord landscape.
The pool maintains a consistent temperature of around 38°C (100°F), making it comfortable for bathing in most weather. Hellulaug is relatively shallow, with a depth of about 60 centimetres and a diameter spanning 3 to 4 metres.
Access and facilities
To reach Hellulaug, travellers follow the Ring Road north from Reykjavík, then turn onto Road 60 (Vestfjarðavegur), which leads toward the Westfjords. Some sections of this road are unpaved, so it is advised to drive carefully while navigating through the area’s dramatic scenery. Shortly before the pool, there is a small parking area, and access to the hot spring requires descending a low cliff on foot.
Hellulaug remains less known than other geothermal sites in Iceland, making it a quieter location and reducing the likelihood of crowds. There is no entrance fee, though visitors can leave voluntary contributions for upkeep in a container near the parking lot. The pool and surrounding area are maintained regularly to ensure good conditions.
Preparing for a visit
Visitors should be aware that there are no onsite changing rooms or facilities at Hellulaug. Changing clothes in the car or wearing swimwear under regular clothing is a practical solution. Given the unpredictable weather and remote setting, bringing additional warm clothes, towels, food and hot drinks is recommended.
