The Golden Circle is a well-known route in southwestern Iceland that connects some of the country’s most renowned natural and historical landmarks. Spanning a convenient distance from Reykjavík, the route brings together impressive landscapes and intriguing geology with stories from Icelandic history.

Gullfoss waterfall

Gullfoss is one of Iceland’s most celebrated waterfalls. Its thundering water plunges down into a rugged canyon, creating a dramatic setting visible from viewing platforms and nearby trails. Gullfoss has become a signature sight of the Golden Circle and is a highlight for many visitors.

Geysir geothermal area

At the Geysir geothermal area, travellers witness the force of nature as geysers periodically send columns of water into the air. The area provides open, grassy spaces where visitors can relax, listen to the sounds of geothermal activity, and watch the eruptions of Strokkur, the most active geyser today.

Þingvellir National Park

Þingvellir (Thingvellir) National Park holds both geological and historical significance. Here, the tectonic plates of North America and Eurasia drift apart, forming a visible rift valley. Þingvellir was also the founding site of Iceland’s parliament, the Alþingi, established in 930. The park’s Silfra fissure attracts those interested in snorkeling and diving in exceptionally clear glacial waters.

Cultural heritage and variety

The Golden Circle is not just a route of natural beauty. It provides insight into Icelandic traditions and folklore, with legends of trolls and long-standing cultural practices associated with the region. The diversity of activities and sites means the area offers something for many different interests, including hiking, photography, and historical exploration.
